About Perception Kayaks
Perception began in modest surroundings in South Carolina in 1974 with a kayak constructed from glass-fibre. In 1976 Perception Inc. was formed and the production method moved to rotational moulding, with a kayak called the Quest. Very quickly the Mirage and Dancer followed and Perception's journey to world renown gathered pace. Today, Perception kayaks and canoes are manufactured in three plants situated in the UK, USA and New Zealand, and the range has grown to be the most diverse and complete on the market.
Perception's R&D team works tirelessly to ensure that the equipment you use on the water is the best they can produce. Every element, from outfitting components ... to materials ... to the design styling, is subject to rigorous testing, with improvements constantly being investigated.
With the introduction of exciting new and innovative models every year Perception promises to be a market leader well into the future.
Gaybo Limited was established in 1968 and in the 39 years since then has built a reputation for quality workmanship and design in the world of canoeing and kayaking. Pioneers in the use of composite materials for lightweight competition craft, Gaybo were the first British company to use the now common place Kevlar fabric. In 1986 with the shift in demand from GRP to polyethylene in the kayaking market, Gaybo took on the manufacture and European distributorship of the Perception range from the USA. Since then Perception has been transformed into one of the leading forces on the European market.
We have had many notable associates over the years, including a partnership with the most successful slalom paddler of all time, five times Slalom World Champion Richard Fox, which yielded a succession of slalom kayaks that dominated the sport for many years.
Outside of the canoe/kayak world our reputation has led to us being the manufacturer of sledges for polar expeditions including the "Footsteps of Scott Expedition" and Sir Ranulph Fiennes and Dr Michael Stroud's record breaking "Trans-Antarctic Expedition".
